Sunday 8th March marks 115 years of International Women’s Day – a global celebration of the progress women have made in society and in the workplace, while also recognising the work still to be done to create truly equal opportunity.

The events industry is powered by women. Globally, women make up an estimated 77–80% of the workforce. Yet despite being a female-majority sector, leadership representation tells a different story. Women hold only around 16% of senior leadership roles, with many concentrated at junior and middle management levels, while men remain more represented at director level and above. This contrast is an important reflection point as we mark 115 years of progress.

At CE, we are proud to be led by a female CEO. Laura O’Bree joined CE in 2009 as an Event Executive. Over 17 years, she progressed through the business, building her experience and leadership along the way. In September 2024, she stepped into the role of CEO, succeeding Andy Ashley.

We sat down with Laura to reflect on what it means to lead a company she has dedicated much of her career to, and who inspired her to strive for leadership along the way.

You’ve been with the company for nearly 20 years. What does stepping into the CEO role mean to you personally?

It’s incredibly special. I’ve grown alongside this business, I’ve seen it evolve, faced challenges with the team and celebrated the wins. To now lead it into its next chapter feels both humbling and exciting.

What does International Women’s Day mean to you?

For me, it’s a moment to pause and reflect on how far we’ve come, but also on the work still to do. It’s about celebrating achievement, recognising contribution and making sure we continue creating opportunities for the next generation of women in business.

Have you had any female role models or mentors who’ve influenced your career?

Absolutely. I’ve been lucky to work with strong, capable women throughout my career – women who led with integrity and resilience. But I’ve also drawn inspiration from women outside of business: friends, family, peers.

What advice would you give to women aspiring to leadership roles?

Ask questions, take opportunities and don’t underestimate the value of your perspective. You don’t have to have all the answers to lead.

What message would you share with women in our organisation this International Women’s Day – 115 years on?

115 years on, International Women’s Day is both a celebration and a reminder. We’ve seen so much progress, but the future will be shaped by the ambition, collaboration and leadership we demonstrate today. My message would be to recognise your value and your impact. Every role within our organisation contributes to who we are and where we’re going.

A big thank you to Laura for sharing her insights with us.

International Women’s Day is the perfect moment to celebrate the incredible women at CE. We’re proud of your talent, your leadership and everything you bring to the team. We can’t wait to see what we’ll achieve together next.
